What VPS best suits me (Windows / Linux)?

Ipera can provide you with a VPS running either Windows Server 2003 or Linux as an Operating System (OS). Which one you should choose depends on the function of your VPS, and the type of web-sites you will be hosting.

The choice of the platform for your VPS depends on the purpose of the hosting. Generally speaking, if you wish to use Microsoft technology, such as .Net and ASP.net then you are limited to using Windows as the hosting platform. If your site uses PHP, Perl or Python, then a Linux  platform will likely be more appropriate. There is a small difference in cost between the two platforms as the Microsoft platform attracts a licensing fee. The Linux platform has no such licensing fees. The main differences between Microsoft Windows and the open source Linux with regards to hosting are listed below.

Windows

  • Active Server Pages

  • ASP.NET

  • .NET

  • MS Access Databases

  • MSSQL

  • Frontpage

Linux

  • Apache ASP
  • Perl
  • PHP
  • Python
  • CGI
  • Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • MySQL or PostgreSQL

Comparison

You would generally choose Microsoft Windows web hosting when you are using a programming language like ASP, .NET or wish to us a database such as Microsoft Access or Microsoft MSSQL server. Although Ipera's web hosting offers HTML, PHP, Perl and Python in the Microsoft Windows webhosting, if you only wish to use one of these languages or a CMS Linux is the operating system of choice. It is stable, secure and slightly less expensive due to the fact that it does not attract a licensing charge.
